Un médecin anglais âgé et son neveu américain de quatorze ans entreprennent un périlleux voyage vers l’Afrique à bord d’un ballon à air chaud, accompagnés d’un guide africain, afin de récupérer un précieux diamant au sommet d’un rocher volcanique, destiné à être offert à la reine Victoria.
